Distinctly Christian

Welcome!

Kenai Classical School is located on the Kenai Peninsula in the beautiful state of Alaska.

Founded in 2019, Kenai Classical partners with parents to train their children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. As a Christian school, we strive to build Christ's kingdom by investing in the young lives entrusted to us.

We have enrollment options for both elementary and secondary students.

Our Mission

Kenai Classical exists to glorify God through offering a rigorous, Christ-centered, classical education that cultivates wisdom and virtue, equipping students with knowledge, skills, and vision to lead and serve in their communities.

Serving You

Classical Christian education considers the whole person, including their worldview, habits, thought patterns, character, and culture. First and foremost, education should be about the cultivation of virtue and a deep appreciation of truth, goodness, and beauty in the souls of our kids. The objective, then, is to shape virtues and sharpen reason so that the life is in line with God’s will — a Christian Paideia.

About Kenai Classical School

Humanities

Mathematics

Mathematics

Humanities encompasses the stories, the ideas, and the words that tell the human story. Understanding our heritage is essential to "letting truth loose." (Augustine) Students read original sources, engage in discussion, and develop strong rhetorical skills.

Mathematics

Mathematics

Mathematics is the language of science and commerce and technology for the whole world. Building mathematical skills is critical to building confidence in endeavors as diverse as adjusting recipes in the kitchen, constructing a warehouse building, or running a multinational corporation.

Science

Mathematics

Latin & Beyond

The original meaning of "scientia"  had to do with knowledge, and yet today science is often void of truth.  At Kenai Classical we teach science knowing that God created the "heavens and the earth." God IS and thereby the world is. Everything exists because of Him.  This doesn't compromise education. This is the foundation to education.

Latin & Beyond

Reading & Writing

Latin & Beyond

We teach Latin.  Why?

"The best grounding for education is the Latin grammar." (Dorothy Sayers)

As the foundation for modern Romance languages and the language of education for over a millennium, Latin provides a grammatical and linguistic framework for further learning across many technical fields and literature.

Then, students may study Spanish (or another approved language).

Students enjoy a variety of electives on a rotating basis. Life skills, fine arts, health, and personal finance are some of the courses offered.

"[The student and the teacher] are in partnership in exploring, expanding, interrogating, and loving this gift [of literature] that is a reflection of the God who created the world with words, sustains it through the Word, and advances his kingdom through the spread of the 'good story.' " (Karen Swallow Prior)

Classical Christian Education and the Seven Liberal Arts

Cassiodorus

In the early Middle Ages, a man named Cassiodorus had a vision for Christian education, and he decided to describe how a Godly man (or woman) should be educated. Cassiodorus divided education into two large categories: divine and secular. Divine learning emphasized a rigorous study of Scripture - thoroughly covering both the Old and New Testaments. Secular learning was divided into seven Liberal Arts (grammar, logic, rhetoric, [the Trivium] and arithmetic, geometry, music, and astronomy [Quadrivium]).

The Liberal(?) Arts

The framework may seem a bit peculiar, but Cassiodorus' predecessors recognized that a particular foundation was necessary to be a “free thinker”, meaning an independent thinker. It required a trained mind. Thus, they called the seven subjects together, the “Liberal Arts.” "Liberal" in this context indicated a pathway to freedom. Freedom from the tyranny of ignorance, and freedom towards building a robust civilization. Equipped with that body of knowledge, a person was also free to study more complicated subjects – subjects like science, philosophy, and theology.

Early Christians, like Cassiodorus, more properly arranged that educational model by pairing divine learning and secular learning. They recognized that knowing God and making Him known is man’s greatest endeavor. This combination of divine and secular study was what Cassiodorus believed would lead to a deeper understanding of God through his Word and his creation.

Kenai Classical School

Since Kenai Classical started in 2019, we have been dedicated to partnering with parents in educating their children in the ways of the Lord.

Our mission is clear. Kenai Classical exists to glorify God by offering a rigorous, Christ-centered, classical education that cultivates wisdom and virtue, equipping students with knowledge, skills, and vision to lead and serve in their communities. We want to instill a deep love for truth, goodness, and beauty in our children's souls so that they will walk faithfully with Jesus Christ and bless their communities.
